250m2 Barcelona property located in the heart of Barcelona is a pendulum between the natural light and the allure of the dark, a threshold between the early 20th century reminiscences and the bespoke contemporary architecture.
About Bruc
A family of four, passionate about architecture and interior design, sought an architect to address the challenges of a post-pandemic reality: a dedicated work-from-home space that wouldn’t compromise the uninterrupted open floor plan.
The concept focused on creating a scenographic narrative with consecutive spatial perspectives formed by full-height doors while balancing abundant natural light with intimate, darker ambiences. Choosing meaningful materials to harmonize with treasured elements of the original interiors was a critical decision.
The project involved transforming an early 20th-century Modernista apartment with intricate interiors, dark corridors, a small disconnected kitchen, numerous service rooms, and shadowy corners. This complex layout required significant structural changes, including new electrical, plumbing, heating, and cooling systems.
A loggia-style corridor, adorned with custom-made doors, serves as the apartment’s central spine. It leads to a “secret restaurant”-inspired kitchen, where cooking becomes a meditative ritual. The bright monolithic island contrasts beautifully with the dark lacquered cabinets.
The living area, or “great hall,” highlights restored ‘Noia’ floors, seamlessly blending with contemporary lighting and signature furniture. The master suite features a sleek walk-in wardrobe that opens to an en-suite bathroom. Fluted glass screens separate the wet area, creating an almost otherworldly effect.
This comprehensive Design & Build urban refurbishment encompassed architectural concepts, detailed design, structural calculations, permits, project management, construction, and restoration.
About Bruc
The project’s concept was to create a scenographic narrative using consecutive spatial perspectives formed by full-height doors, while simultaneously introducing darker, more intimate ambiences to interrupt large amounts of light. The choice of meaningful materials that would blend with the treasured elements of the original interiors was a crucial decision.
This early 20th-century Modernista apartment, with its intricate interiors, long dark corridors, small disconnected kitchen, numerous service rooms, and shadowy corners, presented a challenging transformation. A new layout required significant structural changes, along with the installation of completely new electrical, plumbing, and heating/cooling systems.
This comprehensive Design & Build urban refurbishment included the architectural concept, detailed design, structural calculations, permits, project management, construction execution, and restoration work.
