This recently renovated Barros Apartment in Pedralbes, Barcelona—spotlighted by Wallpaper* magazine—is a striking exercise in tactile brutalism softened by thoughtful materiality. Originally dating from the 1950s–’60s rationalist movement, the 170 m² home was stripped back to expose its concrete shell and legacy brick façade. Cometa Architects layered in warm, handmade almond-hued “magma” clay bricks, custom woodwork, and micro-cement finishes, which together form a harmonious backdrop for natural light to move freely through full-height windows. The design ingeniously incorporates existing vertical piping, transforming it into a stylish composite of storage, media units, and a wine cooler—melding function with poise The overall effect? A home that feels both gently cushioned and confidently rooted, proof that brutalist bones can breathe and belong in a contemporary family life.
