Lightslice
Barcelona, Spain
Residential. Olimpic Port Barcelona Spain. 56 m2. Completed. 2020
Once a dark, 46 m² triangular apartment in Barcelona’s Eixample, now reborn as a luminous spatial sequence.
Its design unfolds along a single longitudinal axis, where every function aligns perpendicularly to it.
Light becomes the structural element, carving order, rhythm, and fluidity into the compact geometry.
The Lightslice is a slender, triangular-shaped apartment where every centimeter has been reimagined to maximize space and daylight. The architects completely stripped down the dark, outdated layout, transforming the once-neglected dwelling into a refined and luminous interior. All internal partitions were removed to create an open-plan configuration that amplifies the perception of space and allows light to flow freely. Layers of worn flooring were replaced, and the original wooden beams — hidden beneath a false ceiling — were restored to reveal the apartment’s authentic character.
The new spatial logic is defined by a longitudinal axis, on which key elements — kitchen island, bed, and basin — are positioned perpendicularly, freeing the walls and establishing a clear rhythm of movement. Crossing this line is a latitudinal axis known as the Light Box: a custom-made lattice structure that filters light from the large balcony windows, gently separating the living and sleeping zones. This glowing partition transforms throughout the day — diffusing daylight by morning and radiating a warm, dimmable glow by night.
A bespoke floor pattern made of handcrafted hydraulic tiles replaces the damaged original, forming a contemporary “tile carpet” that visually connects the different zones of the apartment. Strategically placed mirrors — on the kitchen island and within the Light Box — expand the perception of depth and multiply the presence of natural light.
All fixtures, lighting elements, and furniture pieces have been designed specifically for this project, emphasizing craftsmanship and material precision. Exposed surface installations trace elegant lines across the walls and ceilings, turning functional elements into decorative features.
